Intro to VLAN Configuration
With the information we have gathered so far we can now figure out which ports or blocks of ports will be connected to which VLAN. We can now connect all our devices to their predetermined ports and start the process of assigning ports to VLAN’s. Using our example network configuration here is what our port assignments will look like:
Port 1(Uplink): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 20, VLAN 30, VLAN 40
Port 2(Server): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 10, VLAN 20
Port 3(PC1): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 10, VLAN 20, VLAN 30
Port 4(PC2): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 10, VLAN 20, VLAN 30
Port 5(PC3): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 10, VLAN 20, VLAN 30
Port 6(PC4): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 10, VLAN 20, VLAN 30
Port 7(PC5): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 20
Port 8(PC6): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 20
Port 9(PC7): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 20
Port 10(PC8): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 20
Port 11(PC9): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 20
Port 12(PC10): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 20
Port 13(Printer1): Member of VLAN 20
Port 14(Printer2): Member of VLAN 20, VLAN 40
Port 15(WirelessAP): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 40
Port 16(Phone System): Member of VLAN 1, VLAN 30
Port 17(Phone1): Member of VLAN 30
Port 18(Phone2): Member of VLAN 30
Port 19(Phone3): Member of VLAN 30
Port 20(Phone4): Member of VLAN 30
Port 21(Phone5): Member of VLAN 30
Port 22(Phone6): Member of VLAN 30
Port 23(Phone7): Member of VLAN 30
Port 24(Phone8): Member of VLAN 30
Summary
Servers:
In this configuration if you were to sit down at the server you would be able to communicate with all other wired PC’s. You would also be able to access the internet as well as the management console of the switch.
Computers:
In this configuration if you were to sit down at PC1 through PC4 you would be able to communicate with all other wired PC’s, the server, both printers, and the phone system. You would also be able to access the internet as well the management console of the switch. If you were to sit down at PC5 through PC10 you would be able to communicate with all other wired PC’s, the server, and both printers.
Printers:
In this configuration Printer1 is accessible only by the server and all wired computers. Printer2 however is accessible by the server, all wired computers, and all wireless devices.
Wireless Devices:
In this configuration wireless devices can only communicate with Printer2 and access the internet.
Phone System:
In this configuration the phone system can communicate only with PC1 through PC4. The phone system can also access the internet.
In the future we will build on the basics in this guide to discuss more advanced topics like trunking, tagged vs untagged, DHCP across VLAN’s, and more.
